Paul K. Shitabata, MD
As is our pathology so is our practice...what the pathologist thinks today, the physician does tomorrow.
Sir William Osler, M.D.
As a general rule, the most successful man in life is the man who has the best information.
Benjamin Disraeli
Dr. Shitabata graduated cum laude from Pomona College in 1984. He graduated from John Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii with honors in 1988. He completed his internship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1992. He completed a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA in 1993 and a Fellowship in Dermatopathology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri in 1994. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and has additional subspecialty board certification in Dermatopathology.
He is the President and Medical Director of The Dermatopathology Institute. Through the Institute's activities, he serves as the director of dermatopathology for the Department of Dermatology for the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and for the Western University of Health Sciences Dermatology Residency Training program. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at UCLA-David Geffen School of Medicine and for the Western University of Health Sciences. He is currently the editor of the dermatopathology section for Logical Images, a medical image and education website and a reviewer for Practical Reviews in Dermatology.
He is a former partner and owner of the Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group (1994-2008) and former medical director and member of the Board of Directors for Pathology Inc. (2002-2008), a pathologist-owned reference laboratory in Torrance, California. From 2006-2008, he served as a member of the Leadership Development Committee for the College of American Pathologists. From 1998-2004, he served on the Board of Directors for the Asian American Physicians Association. From 2001-2003, he served as the consultant in dermatopathology for the Department of Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. From 2002-2003, he served on the Council in Public Affairs for the College of American Pathologists.
Dr. Shitabata is the creator and webmaster for several renown websites. In 1999, he created the Doctor’s Doctor website (www.thedoctorsdoctor.com). This site helps patients understand the role of the pathologist and empowers the patient to research their own diagnoses, helping them to decipher the complicated and technical language of the surgical pathologist. At the present, it receives over 7 million visitors a year. It has been written up in several publications and cited as a valuable resource for patients by such prestigious publications as The Wall Street Journal.
DermpathMD is a website for dermatologists, presenting interesting case studies and links to dermatopathological pearls of wisdom. Got Path? is a unique site that provides interesting case studies and controversial issues in diagnostic pathology. Pathologist Mentor is the working website for the mentoring program Dr. Shitabata created for his former pathology group. The program's name PPEP (Pathologist Par Excellence Program) crystallizes the program's goal to maximize the potential of every new pathologist hire on both a personal and professional level.
Dr. Shitabata grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is married to Evangeline Uy Shitabata, D.D.M., M.D.S, a pediatric dentist who practices in Torrance, CA. They have one daughter, Malia Jaye and one son, Ian George. Dr. Shitabata lists his passions as the Four B's (Bebop, Beer, Burgundy wines, and Beef). He enjoys playing and listening to jazz music (listen to him playing), especially jazz guitar. He is an avid fan of the music of Wes Montgomery and still gets goose bumps whenever he hears his recordings. He is the proud owner of a Gibson L5 Wes Montgomery guitar. He enjoys good beers, especially Belgian brews, and regularly presents new tastings to his colleagues. He enjoys culinary excursions for all types of food and never misses a chance for a good wine pairing, particularly wines from Burgundy.
